The Fishers in La Paz, Bolivia

What was in the burgoo

I am married to a wonderful woman from Louisville, KY.  Half her family still lives in the Blue Grass State, and I have to come all the way to Bolivia to discover burgoo.  Hmmm.  Odd.

If you haven’t had it, burgoo is this amazingly yummy stew.

But what made my first burgoo more special still was the fact that I had it in El Alto, the poorest city in the poorest country in continental South America.

Let’s just say that beef is not the most affordable or available meat around.

So, here we are enjoying this amazing dish at Community Group, everyone rejoicing in the Lord together, and one pre-teen girl comes up to me and says, “Did you know there’s Guinea Pig in there?”

I stopped.  I laughed at her funny little joke.

Then I asked around.

Sure enough, there’s a guy farms those little critters in town and, sure enough, there was at least one of them little critters in our burgoo.  Some llama, too (which I’d had before).

Turns out, I like Guinea Pig.

But, if I’m at your house, and you’re serving burgoo, and you don’t have any Guinea Pig around, don’t worry; I’m sure it’ll taste just fine!

I ate guinea pig once in South America too. Let me stress the ONCE. Of course, mine wasn’t in a stew… it was just kind of laying on the plate. YUCK.
(I was a very good guest and ate it right up… but remain traumitized to this day!!)

Always interesting to read what y’all are up to! **And look.. I finally made a comment!
