The Fishers in La Paz, Bolivia

Life in La Paz

I haven’t blogged much in awhile, so I thought I’d give a general update on life right now. We have running water all the time now, so that makes me quite happy. It took awhile for things to get moving here once we returned to La Paz because no one wants to start anything (including Bolivian schools) before Carnaval. Now our weeks are pretty full. (more…)

Yesterday, we decided to visit some museums in La Paz. They were a little bit hard to find, but we were glad we made the effort to climb the many completely vertical stairs to get there. We have photos at Facebook.

Anne and I met Bolivia’s Bishop, Frank Lyons, last week.  He’s here for the next two months. At my other blog, http://blendedworship.wordpress.com, you can read about his visit. I’ll share about him as I learn what he’s got to say. Check it out!

It’s been a relationally good day.

I don’t have much to say about this.  I just had this thought, and realized I needed to write it down, so I didn’t forget that little blessing: it’s truly been a relationally good 24 hours.

Last night, we met and worshiped as the La Paz Community Group.  Anne and I made two really great new connections: one with an Anglican missionary here named Curt, who’s helping organizations with their websites and such; and Cara, whom we already sorta knew, who ministers to the poor in El Alto with an organization called Word Made Flesh. I have a worship blog.  It’s been up for a very short while, and I am just getting into the groove of regularly posting on it.  I have just written some posts about my worship team class at Highlands, as well as our La Paz Community Group.  I’d love it if you checked it out and made a comment or two!).  http://blendedworship.wordpress.com/

Opening prayer for the Season of Lent:  Almighty and everlasting God, you hate nothing you have made and forgive the sins of all who are penitent: Create and make in me a new and contrite heart, that I, worthily lamenting my sins and acknowledging my wretchedness, may obtain of you, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

After the usual Groundhog’s Day Waterfight, go swimming.

Yes, it’s Groundhog’s Day.

Now, if I were to - in the tradition of Bill Murray - abduct Punxsutawney Phil and bring him down to La Paz, Bolivia (a city whose rainy summer weather I would compare to Cleveland, Ohio in the spring or the fall), he might get wet, but he would not likely head back to bed for six more weeks.  In fact, he might get hit by a water balloon or assaulted by a subtance very similar to shaving cream.  You see, it’s summer, and it’s Carnaval weekend.

Our school staff has a tradition of celebrating a tamed-down version of Carnaval by waging a good-natured water-war on its students.  Many were soaked, some were muddied, few were injured and none perished.  Generally speaking, a good time was had by all.

That was yesterday.  Anne and I are badly sunburned (you’d think we’d remember that we are, in fact, two miles closer to the sun!).  Today, we played on a big jungle-gym and went swimming.

If you see Phil, let him know that we’re here and we’re waiting.  No winter.  No shadows.  Just lots and lots and lots of rain.
