I hate to have all the recent blogs be about weather and its effect on us, but it’s kind of been a major factor in our lives this week! Thursday morning we got a phone call saying school was canceled for the day, and we finally got a clue as to what happened the night before with the lights going out and sirens going by, which we almost never hear in La Paz. Yesterday evening, we had an extremely brief power outage. The whole building - presumably the whole block - went dark for most of dinnertime.
This was our first power outage here, definitely due to the thunderstorms that just keep popping up, seemingly at random, and ending just as suddenly during this time of the year (aptly named “the rainy season”).
Although our neighborhood in Davidson, NC had a power outage every three days (it seemed), we knew whom to call. We could always vent our frustrations on the fine people at Duke Energy and, presumably, speed up service by informing them of the outage.
Here, though it has only happened once in six months, it made us a tad nervous.
My friend Kerri, whose family we visited this Christmas, pointed out in a recent comment how strange it is to one day be playing Settlers of Catan at their dining room table in Ohio and then, just a few weeks later, to be chatting across two continents and to be suddenly in such a different life.
But that’s just the thing: I am noticing that both just seem to fit. Both Bolivia and the U.S. are our life.
I mean, how odd is it that we can be - literally and figuratively - back at home in North Carolina; and then, in the course of a day, pack up our lives in six duffel bags and travel halfway around the world and be… um… home?

The prayer for the Church for this coming week:
Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

We arrived back to La Paz in summer, which means the height of rainy season. Thankfully, here it does not rain as much as in the tropical regions. We have nice bits of pleasant, sunny weather almost every day, but the tricky part is predicting when those brief times may occur. The weather is a bigger influence on our lives here for two reasons: lack of a car and lack of a clothes dryer! (more…)

Just wanted to let you know we made it back to La Paz this morning. It was our first time doing an overnight flight. Avery did very well, she slept most of the way from Miami to here. It was certainly easier to not have to entertain her the whole time, but I can’t say I enjoyed trying to sleep on the plane. For some reason, they thought we would all like a yummy airplane dinner at 12:30 in the morning so it took several hours before they turned the overhead lights off. Then at 5:15, they apparently thought we should be up and ready for some coffee and juice because they raised all the shades and droned on and on over the loudspeaker. Needless to say, Tom is now taking a nap. . .
Thankfully, we had no trouble getting back into the country even though we haven’t resolved our visa issues yet. We were excited to come back, but sad to leave the States. We had a great time visiting everyone.
Will post in a day or two once we’re back into the swing of things and have something interesting to say!
